The Power of Tradition

Today we’re drawing relevancy from a powerful passage of scripture in 2 Chronicles 30:1–9,
In this passage, After witnessing and experiencing the fallen state of the temple and the priesthood under the rule of his father, King Hezekiah is inspired to work towards revival, renewal, and restoration. He desired the people to return to being a covenant keeping people of God. So he sent out an invitation to all the people of Israel, were at this point in history were a divided people. The invitation sent to both the northern and southern kingdoms were to come and celebrate the Passover, which had not been done for a long time under the rule of Hezekiah’s father.
His desire for renewal, restoration and a rekindling of keeping the convenant relationship was so heavily inspired that the king was willing to relax certain requirements in order to accommodate the needs of the people.
2 Chronicles 30 is not an invitation to throw out our tradition, nor is it a call to further advance a rigid legalism. It is a beautiful tension — grace extended to draw people back, without removing the sacred center.
We can draw relevance for today from this portion of scripture. Hezekiah wanted a renewed people, not just a larger crowd.
So let us pray for the courage to lead in hard times, the grace to reach across divisions, and the discernment to maintain our traditions that are the language of our faith.
